The Mediterranean and Asean food festivals were inaugurated at LuLu Hypermarket, Barwa City, yesterday.
The festivals are being hosted by LuLu Hypermarket Group in line with its ongoing Food Fiesta 2015. The idea behind the initiative is to highlight Mediterranean and Asean food and food products and to make them popular among the local community.
The festivals were inaugurated by diplomats from various embassies representing Mediterranean and Asean countries in Qatar, in the presence of dignitaries and senior executives from the retail industry and other walks of life.
In a statement, LuLu Hypermarket Group has said it has been organising the food fiesta for the last 13 years and the response every year has been overwhelming. Every year, it culminates with a cookery contest, which gives customers and food connoisseurs the opportunity to hone their culinary skills.
This is also an occasion for various ethnic groups to exchange innovative ideas on various culinary practices.
This year, the cookery contest will take place on April 4 at LuLu Hypermarket, Barwa City.
Mediterranean cuisine is characterised by its flexibility, range of ingredients and many regional variations. Generally, Mediterranean food is considered one of the healthiest in the world as it involves a high usage of fruits and vegetables, bread, wheat and other cereals, olive oil, garlic and fish.
Meanwhile, the Asean Food Festival has been organised with a view to celebrate the culinary heritage of the East. The event has also been conceptualised to accelerate the import of agricultural produce from the Asean countries to the Middle East.
An official from the LuLu management indicated that the festivals would continue for a week. A special display of products (country-wise) has been provided and necessary arrangements have been made for customers so that they can experience the versatility of Mediterranean and Asean cuisines and buy food products of their choice.
