Qatar Red Crescent (QRC) will today launch the sixth Disaster Management Camp (DMC-6) at the Marine Scout Camp, Al Khor, under the patronage of HE the Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa al-Thani.
Top QRC executives, including secretary-general Saleh bin Ali al-Mohannadi and camp director Rashid bin Saad al-Mohannadi, will be present for the opening of the camp which runs until
April 9.
The organisers have finished preparations for the launch of the camp, which is set to be attended by 350 trainees from QRC and 25 Qatari and Arab institutions, in addition to 45 disaster
management trainers.
There will be an intensive training programme for participants, involving theoretical and practical exercises. The camp receives wide regional and international attention as the only Arabic-speaking specialised training event of such a scale.
The purpose is to build a well-trained base of volunteers who respond to disasters in a timely and effective manner, enhance co-ordination with relevant organisations and authorities, minimise casualties and property losses, and help the society recover from any future disasters.
QRC has successfully organised five training camps in 2006, 2007, 2012, 2013 and 2014, graduating hundreds of volunteers who would later play an effective role with the organisation in responding to disasters in other countries.
The camp has established itself as an event that distinguishes QRC not only within Qatar, but also across the region,
according to a statement.
The ample visibility of the camp and the patronage of HE the Prime Minister and Minister of Interior reflect the importance attached by Qatar to the management of natural disasters and international co-operation to respond to and reduce their impact.
Capacity-building is a strategic priority under Qatar National Vision 2030 as the only way to create a culture of preparedness and knowledge of the latest disaster response tools around the world, the statement adds.
