In celebration of World Water Day 2015 and GCC Conservation Week, ConocoPhillips’ Global Water Sustainability Center (GWSC) joined hands with the Awareness and Community Development Department of Qatar General Electricity & Water Corporation (Kahramaa) to host a series of activities designed around water conservation for school students on Tuesday.
The initiative was part of Kahramaa’s festival, held until today at the Diplomatic Club.
Some 350 third grade students from four local schools - Al Rashad Model Independent School, Al Qadisiya Model Independent School, Malik Bin Anas Model Independent School and Jowaan bin Hamad Model Independent School - participated in the fun and informative event.
Held under the theme “Water and Sustainable Development”, the 2015 edition builds upon previous World Water Days to highlight the role of water in the sustainable development agenda. To further reinforce the theme, the day included different interactive activities that promote the importance of water and ways to help conserve for the future.
To stimulate thinking and creativity, the students were first asked by GWSC scientists to describe water in one word, which best demonstrates its importance to them. They were then invited to paint a picture of how they imagine Qatar’s future to be if people make an effort to preserve water. There was also a puzzle for the students to solve, in which they had to come up with new ways to preserve water at home in a fun and efficient manner.
Following this, there was a competition around water conservation and the water cycle. The goal was to educate the next generation on how to conserve water and the vital role the water cycle plays in nature.
The programme ended with a game designed to teach methods to instil a sense of responsibility in conserving water as part of people’s daily routines.
Somaya al-Mutawa, head of education and social awareness, Conservation and Energy Efficiency Department at Kahramaa, said: “ConocoPhillips participated with us through the provision of interactive activities for children. Our interaction with institutions and companies enriches the conservation process and gives the national Tarsheed programme a stronger form under the patronage of HH the Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, and this is a national vision that we hope everyone is working to achieve.”
Gary Sykes, president of ConocoPhillips Qatar, expressed delight at engaging students in the programme. “We are proud to
collaborate with Kahramaa and help equip school students with the knowledge and tools required to use water in a responsible manner. The activities presented by GWSC scientists helped the students understand why conserving water is important and how they can contribute in sustained water conservation to help safeguard future generations.”
