The 31st GCC Traffic Week opened at Darb Al Saai yesterday evening, the Ministry of Interior said.
This year the event is being held under the theme ‘Your Decision Determines Your Destiny.’
The Director General of Public Security Staff Major General Saad bin Jassim al-Khulaifi opened the event at 6pm in the presence of the Director General of Traffic Brigadier Mohamed Saad al-Kharji, along with top officials from GCC countries, directors and officers of different departments of Ministry of Interior.
The week-long event includes workshops for students on the theme of the traffic week and workshop on ‘Your Safety is Your Choice’, free art and workshop on traffic signals.
The activities include seminars on several related topics as well. A seminar will be conducted on ‘Driving Decisions and Their role in Reducing Accidents’.
On the third day the seminar’s topic will be ‘Common Traffic Signals Among Communities’, and on the fourth day ‘Motorcycles - Hobbies and Risks’.
Awareness lectures will be held during the week. Dr Eissa al-Hurr will lecture on the ‘Role of Family in Reducing Accidents’. Experts from Qatar Lawyers Association and Qatar Red Crescent are listed to speak. Awqaf member Sheikh Saaban al-Sinouhri will lecture on ‘Drivers’ Behaviour’.
Hamad Hospital’s Injuries Unit will also present a lecture. Qatar Awareness Group will speak on ‘Rights of Persons With Special Needs’.
Eid Charity, Mawater, different driving schools and other agencies will showcase a variety of events. Competitions will be organised on the sidelines of the Traffic Week, the MoI said.
Earlier in the day, the delegates from GCC countries visited the headquarters of the General Directorate of Traffic and were briefed on its functions and systems. They also held talks with Brig al-Kharji at his office.
During the meeting, the Traffic director-general described the functions of the operations centre and explained how a message about an accident was conveyed to the nearest patrolling team. He stressed that the number of road accident fatalities had declined considerably although the population of Qatar was growing fast, and pointed to the ongoing expansion works in all sectors as part of preparations for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
The delegates also paid a visit to the National Command Centre (NCC) where they were received by Col Saeed Hassan al-Mazroui, director of the Central Operations Department. They listened to a briefing on the work philosophy of the departments and sections under NCC and procedural actions taken from the time of receiving reports and complaints to the delivery of services required.
The delegation members were impressed by the unique advancements offered in service sectors of the government.
