Qatar Red Crescent (QRC) has resumed the winter relief work for the Syrian refugees in Lebanon. The programme was launched last winter on the order of HH the Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, to provide urgent winter assistance to Syrian refugees.

Through the Qatar Development Fund, Qatar offered a grant of more than $30mn of which $20mn were designated for the Syrian refugees in Lebanon and $10mn for those in Turkey. QRC was assigned the task of supervising the programme and delivering the assistance to eligible beneficiaries.

The purpose of the programme is to distribute urgent winter assistance to Syrian refugees in Lebanon. Each family will receive a heater, heating oil coupons, five mattresses, five bed sheets, a hygiene kit, and a tarpaulin cover.

So far, about 21,512 families have been covered throughout Lebanon, and more than 36,500 families will receive heating oil coupons this year.

Saleh bin Ali al-Mohannadi, QRC, secretary general, clarified that this programme is different from the Warm Winter campaign launched last week and implemented annually by QRC in favour of poor families in needy countries.

“QRC will continue to fulfil its commitments and stand by our Syrian brothers in their calamity. We will spare no efforts to alleviate the suffering of Syrian refugees until they return home, enjoying security and dignity,” he stressed.

With the arrival of winter, the distribution of relief material has already begun in different parts of Lebanon under QRC supervision and in co-operation with the staff of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), under an agreement signed by the two parties in December 2013.

According to the agreement signed by QRC and UNHCR in 2013, QRC purchases $20mn worth of relief items in accordance with international standards, while UNHCR distributes them to Syrian families in
different Lebanese districts.
