The Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) has been endorsed as the model for implementing occupational and environmental health standard for the region’s healthcare institutions at a workshop held recently in Bahrain.

The workshop, titled “Developing Mechanism and Plans of Action for Applying the Occupational and Environmental Health Standards for Accreditation Hospitals and other Healthcare Facilities”, focused on formulating mechanisms and action plans for implementing occupational and environmental
health standards for the region.

At the workshop, attended by heads of the executive office of the ministers of health in GCC countries, HMC proved to be the only healthcare institution in the region that demonstrated optimal implementation of the standards.

Delegates from Qatar included Mohamed Babiker El Nimah, chief of the Occupational Health and Safety Department at HMC, and Leo Sigual Dote, safety instructor at HMC’s Occupational Health and Safety Department, as well as representatives of the Supreme Council of Health (SCH) and Qatar Petroleum.

El Nimah said the experience HMC attained during the process of Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation enabled it to fully implement the occupational and environmental health standards, placing the corporation at the forefront in this field within the GCC region.

“During the workshop, we reviewed how the occupational and environmental health standards are being implemented in our hospitals. The participants were highly impressed with our methodologies and, therefore, they endorsed HMC as a model for implementing occupational and environmental health standards in the GCC
region,” he said.

Dr Huda al-Noimi, executive director of Occupational Health and Safety Department at HMC, said: “We are honoured to be elected as a model in implementing occupational and environmental health standards in the GCC region. This achievement reflects the hard work and relentless efforts we made to implement these standards throughout all HMC facilities.”

She explained further that HMC’s accreditation process by JCI has facilitated full implementation of the occupational and environmental health standards. “Moreover, our access to external and internal expertise, facilitated by the corporation, and working closely with the SCH on occupational and environmental health issues, made us attain this rank in the GCC region.”
