Thirteen students from Qatar University Society of Petroleum Engineers Student Chapter (QU SPE SC), sponsored by Maersk Oil Qatar, will represent Qatar at the Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition 2014 (ATCE) in Amsterdam, Netherlands, on October 27.

The ATCE is one of the Society of Petroleum Engineers’ largest conferences and attracts thousands of professional attendees from around the globe. The trip will enable the students to engage with a wide range of industry professionals, exchange experiences with peers from other student chapters as well as learn about opportunities for careers in the oil and gas industry.

A series of events, including soft skills and technical workshops, the annual Petrobowl Competition and a career exhibition - where companies will display their latest technologies and promote job opportunities - will be major features of the trip.

Mehak Jilani, president of QU SPE SC, said: “We are grateful to Qatar University, Qatar-SPE and Maersk Oil Qatar for providing students from the QU SPE SC with the opportunity to gain valuable experience at an international event, which will enhance our understanding of the SPE and the oil & gas industry.”

Sheikh Faisal bin Fahad al-Thani, deputy managing director of Maersk Oil and chairman of Qatar-SPE, said: “Careers in the energy industry are very rewarding and we’re proud to be able to play a key role in helping students learn and acquire new skills that will equip them for a bright future in this sector.

“Maersk Oil Qatar is a major sponsor of Qatar University and the QU SPE SC, and this is part of our commitment to support the next generation of highly skilled engineers and scientists in Qatar. We are confident that the ATCE will provide the students with a highly rewarding experience and valuable new knowledge to bring back to Qatar.”

The QU SPE SC is one of QU’s largest student chapters with over 160 members, and is dedicated to building skills, knowledge and relationships with the petroleum and energy industries in Qatar and internationally through regular workshops, events, competitions and conferences.

Accompanying the student group will be Dr Peter Broeke (assistant professor, Chemical Engineering Department) and Ranya Reda (head of College of Requirements Unit) from QU.
