The Doha Centre for Media Freedom (DCMF) has launched the advanced training course for the trainers of information and media education, with the participation of trainers from Qatar and various Arab countries.

The training course, which was held last Saturday, was aimed at enhancing students’ knowledge on the proper practices and uses of various media and how to handle information sources properly.

DCMF director Saleh al-Shawi, Administrative and Financial Affairs, pointed out the importance of the training in relation to the “rapidly changing events in today’s world.”

He added that the course affirms the DCMF’s approach to introduce the younger generation to the importance of media education and integrating it within the school curriculum.

“We are proud to co-operate with DCMF at the programmes aimed at developing media awareness and the efforts to integrate media education as a subject of school curriculum,” said Dr Ann Paolini, Unesco representative for Arab countries in the GCC Region and Yemen.

She said new media has become “an imminent issue” and involves a variety of challenges on the education of young people and “how to make proper use of it.”

Similarly, Dr Asmaa al-Muhannadi, head of the Supreme Education Council’s (SEC) Scientific Research Department, stressed on the effective implementation of similar training courses that would benefit students on related issues “and spread the adequate principles of media culture among them.”

Media specialists and professors from various Arab countries such as Egypt, Oman, Yemen, and Kuwait participated as trainers of the course, which is scheduled to be concluded on Thursday.
