QR64,000 fine for ‘rash driving’

A criminal court in Qatar, by trial in absentia, has slapped a QR64,000 fine against a Gulf national for “rash driving” that had resulted in injury and a month-long hospitalisation of an Asian worker. On the evening of August 11, 2013, the accused “miscalculated” while trying to overtake another car and collided with the victim’s company-owned vehicle. The victim sustained multiple injuries and  fractured legs, forcing him to stay in  hospital for a month. His medical report rated his disability at 27% . The court said that since the accused failed to appear when it passed the verdict, he was sentenced in absentia under Article 180 of the Criminal Procedure Law.
