The Ministry of Environment (MoE) has won the Silver Award for Qatar Green Construction Systems, given by UK-based The Green Organisation.

The international award was given to Qatar for its effective legislation and green systems. Qatar Authority for Standards and Specifications (QASS) of the MoE had submitted its entry for the award with its set of laws and legislations that deal with the issue of green buildings, which started being adopted in Qatar in 2010.

This includes all related laws and specifications that provide a boost to the concept of sustainability in various fields of building construction.

Further, QASS is currently preparing the green building code, which is expected to be ready by the end of this year. It also has active co-operation with the GCC Standardisation Organisation in preparing the GCC code for green buildings, expected to be accomplished and approved by the GCC countries in 2015.

Meanwhile, the MoE has continued its efforts in co-operation with local, regional and international organisations and scientific institutes concerned to turn Qatar into an advanced country by 2030, able to achieve sustainable development.

The involved targets include maintaining an effective recycling strategy, a clean and safe environment and sustainable buildings and infrastructure.

The Green Organisation has also awarded Dr Mohamed bin Saif al-Kuwari, assistant undersecretary for laboratories and standardisation at the MoE, the Green Building Certificate for his active role in enhancing and promoting environmental issues. He was also nominated for the Green World Ambassador 2015.
