A number of citizens and residents have urged the authorities concerned to grant fresh licences to establishments or individuals to set up new car wash facilities and end the “monopoly” witnessed in this business, local Arabic daily Arrayah has reported.

They said the existing car wash units attached to petrol stations were no longer sufficient to serve the growing number of vehicles in Qatar, the report states.

Meanwhile, a number of Central Municipal Council (CMC) members attributed the limited number of car wash facilities in Doha to various factors, including high rents. Ahmed Kana’ani, a member, stressed the importance of granting licences for new car wash stations outside Doha in this connection, according to the report.

He said crowded car wash facilities are a common sight these days, something that prompts many people to have their vehicles cleaned by domestic workers, drivers or by workers at malls. Such practices are not appropriate as they lead to wastage of water and even cause damage to the road surface, it was observed.

Mohamed al-Khiyarain, another CMC member, said the availability of a limited number of car wash facilities was responsible for the trend of cleaning vehicles on streets, the report adds.
