Under the auspices of HE the Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa al-Thani, the Permanent Committee for Drugs and Alcohol Affairs (PCDAA) recently held the closing ceremony of the ninth annual programme to honour participants in different awareness activities and winning students of research and art competitions.
PCDAA’s Director-General of Public Security and chairman Staff Maj Gen Saad bin Jassim al-Khulaifi said that the event marked the conclusion of an eventful year that saw joint efforts by the government and private sectors as well as schools and others who extended support through various activities.
The official said a number of school students have been trained to deliver awareness lectures on drugs to others in their age groups and this will help convey the message effortlessly.
Among the activities of the programme were sports events, contests, research competitions, art fests and painting contests that depicted the hazards of drugs and their adverse effects on society.
Staff Maj Gen al-Khulaifi said all departments concerned, including the Drugs Department, the General Directorate of Customs and the Coast and Border Security Department, have been equipped to detect drugs, especially at Hamad International Airport.
He highlighted the efforts of the security departments to combat drugs and alcohol abuse in the country, pointing out that the ceremony was held to extend the PCDAA’s gratitude to all supporters.
He also stressed the support of private firms, banks, civil bodies and mediapersons who have contributed over the past nine years to highlight the Weqaya project.
Dr Mohamed Abdul Alim, consultant psychiatrist at Hamad Medical Corporation, thanked the PCDAA for their participation in the ceremony.
He said the ceremony was in its ninth year since the beginning of the national Weqaya project and fourth year since the launch of the national strategy for combating drugs 2010-2015. It was an occasion to review the achievements of the PCDAA, in co-operation with the authorities concerned, to reduce the demand and supply of drugs and psychotropic substances  
Staff Maj Gen al-Khulaifi honoured the participating agencies and organisations including the Civil Defence and other departments of the Ministry of Interior, the Internal Security Force (Lekhwiya), the Ministry of Awqaf, the General Directorate of Customs, the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs, the Supreme Council of Health, the Supreme Education Council, Qatar University, Qatar Central Bank, Kahramaa, Karwa and a number of banks.
Local media organisations, school directors, previous members of the committee and winners of various competitions were also honoured during the ceremony.
