Qatar Petrochemical Company (Qapco) raised environmental awareness, particularly on water conservation, during the eighth Qatar Petroleum Environment Fair at the Qatar National Convention Centre yesterday.

Qapco vice-chairman and CEO Dr Mohamed Yousef al-Mulla said, “Corporations like Qapco have the responsibility to optimise the impact of their operations on the environment, economy and society. At Qapco, the concepts of sustainable development are embedded within our strategy from our daily operations to our products.”

“Environmental management is more than a compliance exercise; it is part of our commitment to grow stronger by managing our impact from every angle, including the environment and in particular water management,” al-Mulla noted. “Water plays a critical role in Qapco’s operations. It is used for cooling, steam production, general operations and potable water consumption. Qapco operates two water desalination units, which produce the majority of freshwater consumed.”

According to al-Mulla, Qapco recycles 39.28% of freshwater input “for reuse” in production and within its grey water landscaping system.

To further improve its environmental performance, al-Mulla explained that the company’s water intensity was reduced by 17% between 2011 and 2013.

At the fair, Qapco engaged young students with workshops and activities on environmental awareness that are both fun and educational.

The company also launched an activity book that was distributed to children to test their knowledge about water and the reduction of water usage at home through “easy practical steps”.

“The environment fair is a fantastic opportunity to engage the youth. Through positive interactions, we can further strengthen the role and active participation of the youth in environmental protection. We are all part of the change. We can all make a difference in shaping a sustainable future,” al-Mulla said.

The company has also launched its internal water conservation campaign, “Save Water, Save the Planet”, al-Mulla announced.

Led by its Environment Section, Qapco employees joined the “Reduce your water usage at home” contest. Employees who would be able to reduce their water consumption in the next three months will win the contest.

“Qapco continues to play an active role in the growth and development of Qatar’s downstream energy sector economy, generating economic returns as well as supporting social development and environmental sustainability through investment in education, our employees and environmental sustainability initiatives,” al-Mulla said.

“Since its establishment 40 years ago, Qapco has continuously invested to modernise and upgrade its facilities, adopting the latest and most sophisticated technologies and monitoring systems and following comprehensive environmental programmes in a drive to further contribute to the preservation of the environment, limit its emissions, protect the flora and fauna and focus on sustainable development,” he added.
