A new Civil Defence centre in Al Thumama was opened by Staff Major General Saad bin Jassim al-Khulaifi, Director-General of Public Security, yesterday.

The opening ceremony was attended by Brigadier Abdul Aziz al-Ansari, director of the Logistics Department; Staff Brigadier Abdullah Mohamed al-Suwaidi, director of the General Directorate of Civil Defence; and directors of Ministry of Interior (MoI) departments and Civil Defence officers.

Staff Major General al-Khulaifi said Qatar has witnessed development in construction, industry and many other areas and there is a great need to provide quality services corresponding to the growth recorded in these sectors.

The Civil Defence offices and other units have been equipped with all modern facilities to cope with different emergency situations, he said, adding that the newly built hall at Al Thumama Centre can host a series of awareness programmes for schoolchildren in the coming days.

Brigadier al-Suwaidi said the Thumama centre would cover areas falling under Thumama, Airport and the Industrial Area. It would also support the requirements of the new fire stations at Hamad International Airport.

The Thumama centre has two special vehicles to handle fires on flights. Several staff members at the airport, it is understood, have undergone training at Frankfurt airport in handling flight fires. There are two state-of-the-art fire stations at the airport, managed by the Civil Aviation Authority.

Brigadier al-Ansari said the Thumama Civil Defence centre has been built to realise the aim of the MoI to provide quality services to all citizens and residents.

He said the MoI has implemented 95% of its strategies in terms of new buildings and these will be accomplished with the completion of the main building of the General Directorate of Passports and Expatriate Affairs, Najda and Police College.
