Aspetar aims to develop internationally competitive skills while maintaining the academic freedom to investigate, report and publish peer-reviewed research, Prof Karim Khan, director of the Research and Education Centre (REC) at Aspetar, has said.

He spoke at the recently held triennial IOC World Conference on Prevention of Injury and Illness at a sport conference in Monaco, where Aspetar demonstrated its ongoing dedication to the protection of athlete health by taking the lead.

Widely regarded as a premier international event for the clinical aspects of sports and exercise medicine, the two-day conference gathered hundreds of field experts from around the world.

A number of Aspetar doctors attended the event, including Aspetar’s Dr Roald Bahr, head of the Sports Injury & Illness Prevention Programme, who served as chair of the Scientific Committee of the conference.

Dr Khalifa al-Kuwari, director-general of Aspetar, said: “The IOC World Conference demonstrates a global commitment to the discipline of sports medicine and as a global platform from which experts discuss the latest medical research and practice from around the world, Qatar is honoured to have had the opportunity to participate.”

During the conference, a series of comprehensive panel discussions, symposiums and interactive workshops explored a range of topics, including “Making a Noise about Sports Injury Prevention – the Power of Social Media”, “Muscle Function & Injuries”, “Preventing Cardiac Events” and “Preventing Heat-Related Problems in Athletes”. Additionally, over 230 thematic posters were on display during the conference.

Meanwhile, a significant highlight for Aspetar was the keynote lecture co-delivered by Dr Domhnall MacAuley, editor of the Canadian Medical Association Journal, and Prof Khan. The duo debated the topic, “Has Sports Injury and Illness Prevention Research Delivered?”.

Commenting on the work of REC, Prof Khan said: “Aspetar’s leading sports medicine services are supported by scientific research and education that takes place at its research facility - where our aim is to develop internationally competitive knowledge while maintaining the academic freedom to investigate, report and publish peer-reviewed research.”
