Qatar Fuel (Woqod) has resumed the sale of Shafaf cooking gas cylinders at its fuel stations, providing great relief to customers.
The sale of the lightweight cylinders at the Woqod fuel stations was stopped after the February 27 gas explosion at a restaurant inside a non-Woqod fuel station complex in Duhail that killed 11 expatriates and injured 35.
According to sources, some Woqod fuel stations in the Industrial Area and West Bay started selling the cylinders yesterday after the company received clearance from the General Directorate of Civil Defence.
Many others were seen getting ready with the rack to store the cylinders set up at the designated location. All the Shafaf racks at the fuel stations had been removed after the decision to stop the sale of the cylinders.
All other Woqod fuel stations will start selling the cylinders in a couple of days, the sources said.
Many customers had complained about the non- availability as well as irregular supply of Shafaf cylinders. Retailers of the cylinders said the decision to stop the sale at the Woqod fuel stations was a major reason for the scarcity in the market.
One of the supervisors of a Sidra store that used to sell Shafaf cylinders at a Woqod fuel station in Mesaimeer area stated that they received instructions from the company about resuming the sale yesterday.
“We have got confirmation from the company that the sale will be resumed and many Woqod fuel stations have already started selling the cylinders from today. The rack for storing the cylinders will be brought back and maybe tomorrow we will start the sale of the cylinders from our fuel station.”
Another supervisor said the sale at his fuel station will begin likely from today.  “We expect to sell the cylinders from tomorrow as we have completed all the arrangements,” he said yesterday.
“The cylinders hereafter will be stored as far away as possible from the fuel station. This makes sure that the safety of the fuel station is ensured.”
He said the customers will be able to get the cylinder regularly. “The decision will be able to sort out the shortage faced by some customers. We will also supply the regulators, which were not available for sometime. Moreover, all the cylinders have been checked for safety recently and only the ones that passed the safety standards will be sold,” he added.
