The Cultural Village Foundation (Katara) launched a book entitled, Qatar and its Maritime Heritage, as part of its advocacy to promote and support Qatari heritage and folklore.

The launching of the book by Katara’s Department of Research and Studies, coincides with the launching of the third (Senyar) contest for fishing and pearl diving. The contest aims to address issues raised by readers, who complained of a shortage on references and specific studies related to Qatari and Gulf heritage.

Katara general manager Dr Khalid bin Ibrahim al-Sulaiti said: “Katara has published this valued documentary book to provide the readers and those interested in tradition with a vivid picture of the historical relationship between Qatar and the sea.”

Al-Sulaiti said the book “highlights the marine life of the people of Qatar and constitutes an important comprehensive reference and educational encyclopadia to instruct the new generations on the rich values of our ancestors.”

“The book includes an introduction and seven chapters that discuss Qatar and the sea historically and geographically, pearl diving, fishing, sailing and timber shipbuilding in Qatar while Chapters VI and VII talk about common seabirds,” al-Sulaiti said.
