The State of Qatar deeply regretted that the report of the High Commissioner for Human Rights has not adequately tackled Israel’s ongoing gross violations of human rights in the occupied Palestinian and Arab territories.
Qatar also expressed surprise at the lack of reference to the continued systematic violations of human rights carried out by the Syrian regime.
This came in a speech delivered in Geneva yesterday by Ambassador Faisal bin Abdullah al-Henzab, Permanent Representative of Qatar to the UN Office at Geneva and other international organisations at the 25th session of the Human Rights Council, item (2) public debate on the report.
Al-Henzab emphasised that failure to reach a just and lasting solution to the Palestinian issue, that ensures the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with full sovereignty and its capital in East Jerusalem, on the basis of the 1967 borders, and the failure to reach a political solution to the Syrian crisis responds to the legitimate aspirations of the Syrian people in democracy, freedom and dignity, will lead to a destabilisation of security, stability and development in all the Middle East region, and its effects may extend to other areas, he added.
The ambassador expressed Qatar’s welcoming efforts by the UNHCR in support of the principle of accountability and impunity for perpetrators of serious human rights violations, stressing the need to ensure accountability for those responsible for grave violations committed by Israel against the Palestinian people.
He also urged ensuring accountability of the Syrian regime for serious human rights and international humanitarian law violations, and bringing the perpetrators to criminal justice.
