Qatar Foundation for Combating Human Trafficking (QFCHT) recently held a cultural salon on the rights of workers under Shariah law, legislations and the media.
QFCHT held such a forum during Ramadan for the fourth consecutive year to convey its vision and message on protecting the rights of vulnerable categories of people in the country. A good number of Muslim scholars, mediapersons and legal professionals, along with representatives of QFCHT, took part in the event.
Speakers at the salon affirmed that the parties concerned should assume an active role in promoting the cause of labourers and spread awareness in society on the importance of protecting their rights. They also stressed that as the expatriate labour force could be more vulnerable to various forms of exploitation, they should be instructed on their due rights and how to claim them through proper channels.
Further, field studies and researches should be conducted by the parties concerned in collaboration with academic institutions in the country to obtain information on the ground situation vis-à-vis the rights of expatriate workers, the speakers said. Similarly, objective standards should be adopted to measure the degree to which the workers got their rights.
