Qatar Foundation chairperson HH Sheikha Moza bint Nasser yesterday announced that three new academic programmes, namely executive Masters in Energy and Resources, a Masters in Library and Information Studies and an Academic Research and Methods certificate course, will  be offered at the Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) soon.

Sheikha Moza also announced that Qatar Foundation (QF) students would be allowed to cross-register at two different universities of their choice within the group.

“I am pleased to announce that we will soon give our students priority to study their choice speciality in one university while still studying a minor speciality in another,” she said, while making the announcement at  QF’s sixth convocation ceremony  at the Qatar National Convention Centre.

The cross-registration plan will begin as a joint initiative in Journalism and Political Science between the Georgetown University – School of Foreign Service and the Northwestern University in Qatar.

“It is our aim to deepen and diversify the academic knowledge of our graduates. This is why one of HBKU’s main priorities is to become a hub promoting all efforts of co-operation, co-ordination and interaction between various universities of Education City,” Sheikha Moza said.

“This is the model that we thought would characterise our academic project - a project that would encompass new and diverse programmes offered by a number of universities,” she noted.

The class of 2013 has the highest number of graduates in Qatar Foundation’s history, with 437 students from over 60 countries. In 2012, 373 students were awarded degrees.

The gender gap has shifted in favour of females, with 229 women and 208 men making up the class of 2013. In 2012, the graduates consisted of 188 women  and 185 men.

In his address to the new graduates, HBKU president and QF vice president Sheikh Dr Abdulla bin Ali al-Thani praised the students on their  achievements.

Speaking at the  ceremony, Wikipedia co-founder Jimmy Wales pointed out that “it is crucial for our societies to have a tolerance for risk-taking because it is in those times of daring adventure that innovation happens”.
