Doha-based entrepreneur C K Menon has been nominated as the global president of the Overseas Indian Cultural Congress (OICC).
The OICC is the only Congress-oriented forum among Malayalis worldwide patronised by the Kerala unit of the Congress party.
The OICC has chapters in 35 countries, including in all six Gulf states.
The announcement was made by Ramesh Chennithala, president of the Kerala unit of the Congress Party, at the global conference of the OICC held in Abu Dhabi.
In his address later at the conference attended among others by Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and Non-Resident Keralites Affairs minister K C Joseph, Menon said he did not want to see his new position” as a “decorative” post and would use it for bringing relief to thousands of expatriates in the Gulf region.
“I am hopeful that I would be able to bring genuine issues concerning Indian and Keralites expatriates to the attention of the authorities in India as and when required.”
He vowed to turn the OICC into the strongest and most viable expatriate forum among the Keralites expatriates.
The organisation, he said, would step up efforts to make e-voting in Indian parliament and state assembly elections a reality.
