On Earth Day 2015, which will take place on April 22, a barrage of events across the world will be held in solidarity of protecting Mother Nature. Qatar, too, will have a flurry of activities.
The Tarsheed Filmmaking Competition – an initiative by the Doha Film Institute (DFI) and the Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation Kahramaa, to celebrate the day – which is open for all university students in Qatar, has just become more interesting. Anticipating a solid response, the March 31 deadline for submissions has now been extended to April 11.
The competition’s focus is on raising awareness about conserving water and electricity, by conveying through a short film as to how we can save Earth’s resources.
The rules are simple. All films must be from 30 to 60 seconds in length. The films must focus on the theme of water and electricity conservation, and they must be shot and edited with the filmmakers’ own equipment.
In its invitation to the students to participate in the Best Advertising Competition by The National Program for Conservation and Energy Efficiency ‘Tarsheed’, Kahramaa asks students to design an effective print ad or TV commercial that reflects the importance of conservation of our precious resources of electricity and water in order to use them efficiently and promote environmental awareness within our society for a better life.
As for the print ad competition, consistency of colours, uniformity and harmony of elements will be considered in the design.
Winners will be honoured in the third celebration of launching Tarsheed, on April 22. For more information, check out www.km.com.qa/tarsheed and www.dohafilminstitute.com
Last April, Kahramaa and DFI signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for co-operation in spreading awareness about the ongoing Tarsheed.
The MoU aimed to promote the benefits of the Tarsheed campaign among residents by involving them in the cause by using their creativity and communication skills. For Earth Day, DFI had invited one-to-three-minute-long entries for the competition, the theme of which was “Saving electricity and water.”
By organising and co-ordinating events of such nature, Kahramaa maintains that it is committed to its responsibility of providing sustainable resources for electricity and water.
Tarsheed, which was launched as a campaign in year 2012 under the patronage of HH the Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, is reaching new heights, believe its officials. The primary target of Tarsheed is to reduce the per capita water and electricity consumption in Qatar by 35 per cent and 20 per cent, respectively, up to 2017.
