How good is all the theory without connecting it with the practical? The Northwestern University in Qatar (NU-Q), recently, successfully concluded its innovative career networking event that offered both past and present NU-Q students the opportunity to meet and engage with leading Qatar-based media companies.

Organised by the Northwestern University Club of Qatar, the event held at MBCo in the Gate Mall was attended by NU-Q alumni, Northwestern University Evanston (NU-E) alumni in the region and the current Class of 2015, who discussed pressing topics with local companies including Agency 222, Bloomberg News, Doha Film Institute, Doha News, Ginger Camel, Qatar TV and Teach for Qatar.

The theme of the evening was speed networking, where each NU-Q participant had only two minutes to converse and impress industry leaders, before moving onto the next. It provided a unique and stimulating opportunity for students and alumni to engage and listen with experts within their career field of choice who were there to help guide them on their career journey.

When Leena al-Musalmani from the class of 2013 was asked to rate the event, she said, “I would give this event a 9 out of 10 [and] that is only because I did not get a chance to speak to all of the people in the room.” She wished that it could go on longer.

“Our graduates are prepared for an incredible array of career opportunities through their education,” said Everette E Dennis, Dean and CEO of NU-Q.

“Students are prepared to work in media and related fields as reporters, producers, editors, public relations professionals, filmmakers, screenwriters, researchers and advisers for government and private industry. As we look to educate future media and communications leaders, it’s encouraging to see the opportunities NU-Q students have to make connections with prominent players in Qatar and the regional media industry,” she said.

Qatar TV producer Rashad Eid noted the importance of attending such an event and the character of NU-Q graduates. “NU-Q students are known throughout Qatar to be well-spoken and hold very good positions in the field. The event could not have been more perfect.”

NU-Q programmes help cultivate top talent from Qatar and the region. NU-Q students have found success at major institutions such as: Al Jazeera, Al Rayyan, Emiri Diwan, Doha Film Institute, Hamad Hospital, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Qatar 2022, Qatar Airways, Qatar Foundation, Qatar Media Corporation, RasGas, and Total Energy and Petroleum.

Students receive instruction from a world-class international faculty as part of a university boasting more than 200,000 living alumni, including countless public figures, statespersons, and societal leaders. NU-Q is committed to excellent teaching, innovative research and the personal intellectual growth of students within a diverse academic community.

Northwestern University in Qatar draws from its parent organisation, Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, a distinguished history, famous programmes and an exceptional faculty. Founded in partnership with Qatar Foundation, NU-Q provides a framework through which students explore the world and, ultimately, shape its future through its distinguished schools of communication, journalism, and liberal arts.
