A tribunal in Dhaka yesterday convicted three people, including two siblings of killing O-level student Mohamed Ammar Shamsi in the Bangladesh capital’s Lalbagh area in 2000, and sentenced them to death.
The convicts are Alamgir, son of Mohamed Idris from Shahidnagar, Mohamed Ziaur Rahman, son of Firoz Uddin of the same area and his brother Salahuddin of Angur Lane in Lalbagh.
According to the prosecution, Mohamed Ammar Shamsi, an O-level student of Dhanmondi Memorial Ideal School and son of Towfiq Shamsi, was kidnapped on October 16, 2000 while going to the birthday party of one of his friends, Mostafa Aslam Bappi.
The following day, the kidnappers demanded 1mn taka from the  victim’s brother Zafar over phone, threatening to kill him if their demand was not met.
On October 19, Towfiq Shamsi lodged a complaint with Lalbagh Police Station in this connection. On October 25, Detective Branch of police arrested Salahuddin from the New Market area when he came to collect the ransom money from the victim’s father.
According to information gleaned from Salahuddin, the law enforcers arrested Alamgir and Ziaur Rahman from the area. Later, the accused disclosed that they took Ammar to Gazipur National Park and had strangulated him to death on October 16.
Later, the police recovered the body from the park. A case was also filed against four people in this connection.
Detective Branch Inspector Sadequl Islam submitted the charge sheet against four people on July 31, 2001. The court framed charges against them on May 28, 2002.
Following an appeal filed by the accused against the charge-framing, the High Court on April 13, 2004 stayed the case proceedings.
