Bangladeshi volunteers and residents lift up a hosepipe as firefighters try to extinguish a fire in a plastic factory in Dhaka

Nine people were killed on Saturday when a fire swept through a plastics factory in a crowded market in a suburb of the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka, police said.

Scores were injured and more people may have died, a police official at Shah Ali Police Station said.

Firefighters brought the fire under control and were serching through the ruins of the Nasim Plastic House, located in the market in Mirpur suburb.

The issue of safety in Bangladeshi factories was thrust into the spotlight by the collapse of the Rana Plaza building in April 2013, which killed more than 11,100 garment factory workers.
