The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) yesterday asked the organisers to wrap up open-air Pahela Baishakh (Bengali New Year) functions in the capital before the sun sets.

Hundreds of open-air rallies, music concert and fairs have been planned in the capital to celebrate the Bangla New Year’s day tomorrow.

Tens of thousands of people are expected to pour into the streets and parks to greet the first day of Bangla year 1421.

Ramna Park, Suhrawardy Uddyan and Rabindra Sorobor are among the places of the celebration.

DMP commissioner Benazir Ahmed told a news conference that adequate security measures have been taken for peaceful celebration of Pohela Baishakh.

“We hope the city dwellers will co-operate with the law enforcing agencies in smooth celebration
of the festival,” he said.

Barricades will be set up at 22 strategic points in the capital to bar vehicles from the celebration venues, he added.

He asked the city residents not to carry bags, knives, nail cutters and blazing objects at the
celebration venues.

“Don’t smoke publicly … please inform police whenever you notice any suspicious object or person at celebration venues,” he said.
