Andy Brown with British Prime Minister David Cameron during the latter’s visit to the Pearl GTL site earlier this year
Executive vice president of Qatar Shell and managing director of Pearl Gas to Liquids project Andy Brown was recognised with the Project Manager of the Year Award in the Oil & Gas Middle East Awards in Dubai.
This is in recognition of Brown’s leadership of Pearl GTL over the last nine years, resulting in the successful project delivery and start-up and, above all, an excellent safety performance in the world’s largest and most innovative GTL plant.
QP and Shell announced the shipment of the first on spec cargo of GTL Gasoil from Pearl GTL on June 13. This was a culmination of 500mn hours of design and construction work in the largest energy project in Qatar and what was the largest construction site in the oil and gas industry anywhere in the world with 52,000 workers. The project’s safety record was acknowledged when it was awarded the Gold Award for safety in the inaugural Oil and Gas industry Awards in September this year.
Pearl GTL is jointly developed between Qatar Petroleum and Shell. It is the largest project launched in Qatar and at $18-$19bn is Shell’s largest single investment anywhere in the world.
“I am extremely honoured to receive this award. Pearl GTL has in so many ways been an exceptional project, notably because of its scale, innovation and global significance,” said Brown.
“What I find really impressive is the dedication and professionalism of the teams and individuals who contributed to this project. From researchers developing GTL technologies on the labs, to young engineers climbing the first rungs on their career ladder, to the project leadership who have overcome tremendous challenges to bring the project on stream on schedule and on budget, they all demonstrated great professionalism. I receive this award on behalf of these fantastic teams that made this engineering marvel a reality,” he said.
Pearl GTL is a fully integrated upstream/downstream, world-scale project located in Ras Laffan Industrial City, more than 80km north of Doha. It captures the full value chain from offshore development through onshore gas processing to refining of finished products in one project.
When fully operational, Pearl GTL will produce and process around 1.6bn cubic feet a day of wellhead gas from the world’s largest single non-associated gas field, the North Field. It will have the capacity to produce 140,000 barrels a day of high quality GTL products (gasoil, naphtha, kerosene, normal-paraffin and lubricants base oils), thereby help meet the increasing global demand for high quality hydrocarbon. It will also produce 120,000 barrels a day of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), condensate and ethane.
