The Qatar Independent Technical School (QITS) has introduced new specialties to meet the demands of the local job market, which includes international companies, a school official has said.
QITS is currently the only school of its type in Qatar that imparts technical training to Qatari students.
“There is an increasing demand from the international companies working in Qatar for the graduates of QITS. The school has also introduced new specialties to provide for the needs of the local market,” Abdulla Shams, general manager, QITS, told Gulf Times in an interview.
He said that QITS is currently the only school of its type in Qatar and hoped that in future there would be more specialised schools.
The school currently has 426 students and a budget of around QR40mn a year. The school is mainly under the management and supervision of Qatar
Petroleum (QP).
Mohamed Eid, senior instructor at QP, said that the company closely monitors training at the school to ensure that students acquire the required knowledge. QP also offers students a summer vocational training for one month at the company facilities, and the students get QR1,000 as stipend.
He added that the training is usually limited for the students of the first and second year because the final year students are occupied in job search or pursuing higher education.
Shams said the educational programme at the school is divided into academic subjects (which take around 70% of the instruction time) and technical training in workshops and laboratories constitutes 30% of the instruction time. The technical disciples include industrial mechanics, welding, electricity, instrumentation, industrial processes and information technology (IT).
The general manager said that in the following term, the school will introduce an industrial laboratory department to provide the market with qualified Qatari lab technicians. “QITS has also incorporated an IT Microsoft certified academy which serves the students and the local community by implementing modern technology into life and labour market.”
However, students have to be medically fit to qualify for admission at the school because of the practical nature of
training.
Students are offered various incentives such as a monthly reward of QR1,000 for the first year, QR2,000 for the second and QR3,000 for the
final year.
Shams pointed out that QITS management maintains the highest discipline standards to prepare students to be responsible when joining the labour market. The school also applies IELTS standards and encourages students to attain high scores at the international test by paying back the test fees for the students who attain the target scores.
The general manager said that QITS maintains high standard of safety and security at work. “Students have to wear school uniform at all time. The number of trainees at workshops never exceeds 10 students, supervised by an instructor and an assistant at all time. Also, we make sure that students wear full protective gear while practicing,” he added.
