Expatriate forum Bangiya Parishad Qatar held a function on Friday to coincide with the 150th anniversary celebrations of India’s first Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore. The Indian poet, philosopher and thinker was the first non-European to win the coveted honour in literature.
The organisation, affiliated to the Indian Cultural Centre, has planned to host a series of events running until May next year as part of the celebrations.
Organisers of the function honoured Tagorean scholars from India Sumitra Sen, Gouri Ghosh and Partho Ghosh for their contributions to promote Tagore’s works and arts and also for the enrichment of the Indian and Bengali culture globally.
Bangiya Parishad president Animesh Sarkar handed over the mementos to the visiting scholars.
Remembering Tagore’s works, the guests paid rich tributes to the poet who penned the national anthems of India and Bangladesh.
They narrated episodes from the poet’s life, and rendered his poems to applause from the audience .
Bangladesh ambassador Shahadat Hossein was the chief guest. Indian Cultural Centre president K M Varghese was among the guests at the event.
The gathering comprised a large number of Bangladeshi nationals and a few western expatriates as well apart from many Indians.
At the meeting, the organisers created an appropriate ambience incorporating traditional and ethnic decoration of the stage and the hall.
