Corporate representatives at a press conference  announcing the launch of the third CSR conference in Doha
Qatar Cool takes part in the third corporate social responsibility (CSR) conference starting at Doha’s Sheraton Hotel today.
The two-day conference, being held in partnership with the Ministry of Business and Trade and the Qatar Institute of Directors, aims to set out recommendations to adopt national standards of CSR in the state, defining the role both the government and private sectors will play.
Qatar Cool joins major local companies at the conference, hosting a session tomorrow titled, “The future of environment in Qatar and social responsibility”. In this session, Qatar Cool will highlight the positive impact district cooling currently has on society and environment.
Qatar Cool CEO Fayad al-Khatib said: “CSR is an implicit part of what we do at Qatar Cool. We are aligned with Qatar 2030 Vision and its environmental development programme aimed at finding harmony between economic growth, social development and
environmental protection.”
He said district cooling is an integral part of Qatar’s future.
The conference will discuss environmental challenges unique to Qatar and the region as well as the role of corporate shared responsibility to preserve the environment and the incentives or penalties that would accompany the recommended legislation.
Al-Khatib added: “In this part of the world, we are one of the pioneers at the forefront of district cooling making the environment our priority”.
The conference takes place amidst a large movement of positive developments in the field of corporate social responsibility in Qatar and will culminate in the formation of a private Qatari CSR organisation, under the auspice of the Ministry of Business and Trade.
Meanwhile, Dolphin Energy has announced that it will participate in the CSR conference.
“We are delighted to participate in the conference because it provides an opportunity to contribute to the evolving sustainability agenda. We will also have the chance to collaborate with government ministries such as the Ministry of Business and Trade, private sector companies and international organisations,” said Adel Ahmed Albuainain, Dolphin Energy Qatar general manager.
“This event is helping to raise the strategic value of corporate social responsibility and we look forward to playing an important part in the debates and discussions that will take place,” Albuainain added.
As platinum sponsor of the event, Dolphin Energy Qatar has been invited to present details of the company’s second Sustainability Report, which was issued in July.
The report measures Dolphin’s performance in 2010 against a set of sustainability performance indicators and targets set in 2009 and provides highlights across the following areas – creating economic opportunity, minimising environmental impacts, ensuring safe operations, improving community engagement and becoming the employer of choice.
This year’s report was classified by the GRI as “A/GRI Checked”, the best rating possible, indicating high levels of transparency and disclosure.
“The report illustrates our commitment to drive positive economic, social and environmental impact and sets out our intention to adopt proper sustainability management practices. It marks another important shift in the behaviour of the company as we move towards that of a social advocate and a good corporate citizen,” Albuainain said.
