An official delegation from Lebanon’s Irshad & Islah Islamic Beneficent Association recently visited Qatar Red Crescent (QRC) to sign a new memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the joint conduct of a natural childbirth project for Palestinian women at the hospitals of Palestine Red Crescent (PRC) in Lebanon, in co-operation with the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East.
The six-month pact was signed by QRC secretary-general Saleh bin Ali al-Mohannadi and Irshad & Islah chairman Wassim Mohamed al-Mogharbel. It is governed by the provisions of the four Geneva conventions and their two additional protocols.
Under the agreement, QRC will fund the natural childbirth project with $155,000 (QR563,906), while Irshad & Islah will manage the project with “highest proficiency in line with international medical care standards”, according to a statement. The scope of the document covers the exchange of experience, experts, information, statistics and visits in relation to the conduct of the project.
“This agreement embodies QRC’s values and ideals as an international humanitarian organisation with a proven track record in humanitarian, relief and volunteering action locally, regionally and globally. It has always worked to alleviate the suffering of nations affected by natural or economic calamities, inspired by its noble cause of helping people wherever they are regardless of their gender, ethnicity, colour or religion, with a view to fulfilling their aspirations for a decent living,” said al-Mohannadi.
Regarding the prospects of humanitarian action in Lebanon, al-Mohannadi stressed the “necessity of re-prioritising the needs of Palestinian and Syrian brothers”, which was agreed upon with al-Mogharbel, to announce a new and up-to-date approach towards the situation in Lebanon over the period ahead, the statement adds.
On his part, al-Mogharbel commended the long-standing relationship between Irshad & Islah and QRC, which is now almost 10 years long, witnessing dozens of joint health and relief projects for Syrian refugees in Lebanon and the needy Palestinian and Lebanese communities.
“It is an old endeavour launched by QRC as part of its leading humanitarian initiatives in solidarity with the vulnerable in Lebanon, together with us and with other charitable organisations. On behalf of the Lebanese people, I would like to express my best thanks and wishes for you,” he added.
