The Indian Community Benevolent Forum (ICBF), in association with Atlas Polyclinic, is organising a free medical camp for low-income workers on September 5.

The camp will be held at West End Park, Atlas Polyclinic, from 7am to 4pm.

HE the Minister of Labour and Social Affairs Dr Abdullah Saleh Mubarak al-Khulaifi and Indian Ambassador Sanjiv Arora will inaugurate the camp. 

The 16th Medical Camp of ICBF will offer free medical consultation for orthopaedics, ophthalmology, dermatology and dental treatment as well as for hypertension and diabetes, providing free medicines for more than 1,000 low-income industrial and private workers living in the Industrial Area.

Pre-registration of workers for the medical camp has started in areas where labour camps are located. On-the-spot registration will also be done on the day of the camp for patients who require such attention.

A team of experienced doctors (GPs and specialists), paramedic staff and pharmacists from Atlas Polyclinic will attend the Medical Camp. Further, a team of around 20 volunteers from Tulu Koota will support the camp.

ICBF is a charitable organisation under the aegis of the Indian embassy in Doha.

 

SEC’s back-to-school campaign starts today

The back-to-school campaign of the Supreme Education Council (SEC) will start today at Doha Exhibition Centre (DEC) and Ezdan Mall.

The activities of the campaign are scheduled to take place daily from 3pm to 10pm at DEC and from 4pm to 8pm at Ezdan Mall, except on Fridays, when they will be held from 2pm to 8pm.

The campaign, which will run for 10 days, will feature a number of educational and entertainment activities to engage students and enhance their participation in the initiative. Parents, students and SEC officials will take part in the campaign, which is being held under the theme “With education, we build Qatar”.

Hassan Abdulla al-Mohamadi, head of media and communication at the SEC, said the campaign coincides with the beginning of the new academic year and is aimed at enhancing communication with the public. It is also a good opportunity for the council to wish parents and students on the beginning of the new academic year.

In addition, the campaign will offer support and help to schools to start an effective and productive new academic year.

Jaber al-Shawi, campaign co-ordinator and assistant head of media and communication, said the activities of the campaign will include interactive competitions aimed at improving the memory of students and gearing them up for the start of a new school year.

A group of SEC officials from different departments will be present throughout the campaign to answer any queries that the parents and students may have.

 

Minister to hold press conference

HE Minister of Education and Higher Education and Secretary General of the Supreme Education Council (SEC), Mohamed Abdul Wahed Ali al-Hammadi will hold a press conference today on the occasion of the beginning of the new academic year 2014/2015, which is due to start on Sunday, September 7.

The minister will review the SEC efforts in preparation for the new academic year.

The press conference which will be held at the SEC headquarters, will also be addressed by directors of the SEC institutes and departments, where they respond to questions and inquiries of media representatives.

 

Police detain North Korean pair over bootlegging

Police have detained two men, identified as North Koreans,  for brewing and selling alcohol in a GCC country,  sources said yesterday.

Police are making further investigations after the pair’s arrest.

The sources said the two men were working as  drivers for a group employing North Korean labour. They have been accused of selling alcohol to workers from North Korea and  a third country.

The sources said the  two would be deported, after legal proceedings and if found guilty.

In a similar case in July, another North Korean was detained but sources said that the detained man was working as an interpreter.

 

Four executed for drug trafficking

Three Syrians and an Iranian convicted of drug trafficking were executed in Saudi Arabia yesterday, the Interior Ministry announced in Riyadh. Syrians Hamud Hassoun, Hassan Musalamani and Yussef al-Halqi were arrested with a “large amount of banned amphetamine pills,” according to three separate statements on the official SPA news agency. An Iranian, Reda Idrisawi, was put to death in Eastern Province, after he was convicted of trafficking “a large amount of narcotic hashish by sea,” another agency statement said.

 

Crackdown on street hawkers

The General Control Section of Doha Municipality continued yesterday inspection campaigns against street hawkers in Industrial Area in an aim to reduce this phenomenon. The campaign was carried out in collaboration with the General Control Section of the municipality, Al Fazaa Police and Public Hygiene Project. During the campaign 10 street hawkers were arrested with their goods confiscated and destroyed.
