Volkswagen Qatar has announced the winner of its #MYVWQATAR competition that gave local artists and Volkswagen enthusiasts the opportunity to create their own bespoke ‘Golf R’ designed vehicle.

The entrants came together on April 10 to showcase their unique creations at the Q-Auto showroom, the official distributor of Volkswagen in Qatar.

Entrants were given the outline of a white Golf R and asked to use their artistic spin on the blank canvas to add their own creative design. Their final creations were then uploaded on Instagram using the hashtag #MYVWQATAR

Kevin Hughes, general manager of Q-Auto, said: “Hosting the #MYVWQATAR competition underscores Q-Auto’s ongoing efforts to encourage creative talent, nurture local skills and support the community. We want to build and strengthen our relationship with fans and will continue this tradition by offering opportunities to blend art, design and technology, highlighting Volkswagen Qatar’s forward-looking spirit in the name of driving innovation.”

The competition gathered over 75 ‘exceptional’ submissions that were showcased at the Q-Auto showroom, which was transformed into a Golf R art haven. The entrant’s designs were exhibited using blue, green and red Golf R cars as innovative easels.

The winning design was chosen by a panel of judges that included Stefan Craita, marketing manager of Volkswagen Qatar, Kevin Waller, managing director of IloveQatar, James McCarthy, regional managing editor at Firefly Communications and Shadi Said, sales manager at 49th Street Customs.

Jeffrey Vergara winning entry, ‘Picture my future ride’, earned him an all-expense-paid trip to Wolfsburg in Germany to tour the Volkswagen headquarters.

“When I was developing the idea for my design, I visualised my future ‘ride’ and how good it would look at let’s say an empty parking lot. Volkswagen’s ‘Das Auto’ tagline inspired me and I developed a design that is colourful, modern and trendy. This is the car of my dreams,” said Vergara as he received his prize.

Mohamed Shawash’s design won the second prize, dinner for two at Ipanema, one of the finest Brazilian restaurants, courtesy of the Renaissance Hotel.

Alaa Tawarneh came third and won a QR500 Virgin Megastores voucher for his creative work.

The competition was open for a month with contestants encouraged and supported by the Volkswagen team. Through engaging in social media discussions, entrants were offered answers to questions about their artistic approach, while ensuring that their designs were in keeping with the overall Volkswagen brand identity.
